Dear Readers,
CONTENTS
Do you recognize that face on the
right?! Familiar? 3
Preserving the Culture of
After a hiatus of the last four Agriculture, Canada
issues of C.A.L.L., I’ve returned as
editor of this beloved publication. 4
After two and a half years in the Paris Kibbutz, France
United States, I’ve returned to
normality, if you can call it that - 6
to my full-income sharing, 150 souls all-living-under-one-roof, The Return of ICSA
urban kibbutz in Israel. And of course back to, amongst other
things, the Intentional Communities Desk (ICD). 7
L’Arche, Australia
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Gabe, whose capable
hands and eye for detail ensured that C.A.L.L. continued to 10
drop through your letter boxes with stories and articles on
communal living from around the globe. Hakhel, Israel
And another development here at the ICD is our new cover 11
design, soon to be updated website and increased social media Co-housing and Housing
presence. It’s all change here, and it reflects our belief that the Cooperatives, UK
communities scene can and must keep moving to retain its
relevance in today’s fast moving world. 13
Millennials and Communal
Actually, I’ll be soon heading back across the Atlantic to Living, USA
attend the International Communal Studies Association (ICSA)
conference being hosted by the cluster of Camphill 14
Communities north of New York. It’s an opportunity to meet Jinwar, Syria
old friends, make new ones, network and learn from others
who are either researching, or living (and sometimes both) a 16
community life. Somerfield Commune, New
Zealand
So what do we have in this issue:
17
To be honest, we have it all; Europe, New Zealand and Compersia, USA
Australia, North America, the Middle East, rural communities,
urban communities, new communities and old ones. We’ve 19
even got a piece on a women only commune in Syria! Communes in America (1975-
2000), USA
All that is left to say now is that I hope you enjoy reading this
issue as much as I have had putting it together. Please share it 20
with your friends and fellow community seekers. Federation of Egalitarian
Communities, USA
