Much research has gone into the phenomena of virtual
communities, and although they can no way replace the face-to- Land of Plenty, Russia
face interaction which living with others engenders, they do
enable us to share knowledge, experiences and opinions with like- 10

our publications – C.A.L.L. in English, and our revived Hebrew 17

As we celebrate here in Israel the 100 year of kibbutz, I’d like to Jindibah Community,
leave you with a few wise words from one of the founding fathers Australia
of the first kibbutz, Joseph Baratz:

Mutual aid was the basis for our work and success. We Green Living Thrives in
regarded the group as our family and aspired to create a just Communes
way of life… We opted for our unique way of life because it
fit our ideals. We aspired to establish a small unit, a just
society which might serve as a model for others. 22

This ‘model’ has indeed been an inspiration for ‘others’. Many
around the world have looked to kibbutz as the example for what 23
is achievable with a combination of belief and hard-work. In Israel, ICSA Conference,
with over four generations of community-building already behind Israel
us since Baratz, together with ten other visionaries, formed
Degania, and despite reports to the contrary, the communal idea 25
and practice is experiencing a rebirth and is starting to flourish Mackenzie Heights
